About the course
In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, the intersection of human-product interaction and digital systems has become increasingly complex. While technological advancements in the realm of ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) are rapidly growing and being employed on a large scale, the current landscape of IoT systems primarily relies on screen-based and voice-based interactions through smartphone applications. From a design perspective, it is suggested that leveraging rich and embodied interaction would result in better grasping the concept of IoT by the end-user (Frens et al., 2018). However, these principles often fail to extend throughout commercial IoT design practices.
Consequently, the paramount learning goal within this course was to navigate the challenges and opportunities inherent in this domain, giving rise to answering the question “How can we design for rich and embodied interaction in home IoT?”. To explore this question, a design case was initiated focusing on the concept of two
Consequently, the paramount learning goal within this course was to navigate the challenges and opportunities inherent in this domain, giving rise to answering the question “How can we design for rich and embodied interaction in home IoT?”. To explore this question, a design case was initiated focusing on the concept of two rich interactive ‘Loci of Interaction’ with distinct core functionalities for livingroom IoT. The first core functionality is aimed at enhancing social connectedness, while the second core functionality revolves around entertainment. Moreover, the blending of these two core functionalities had been explored by merging them together, resulting in the alleged emergent functionality:
rich interactive ‘Loci of Interaction’ with distinct core functionalities for livingroom IoT. The first core functionality is aimed at enhancing social connectedness, while the second core functionality revolves around entertainment. Moreover, the blending of these two core functionalities had been explored by merging them together, resulting in the alleged emergent functionality:
Core Functionality 1 Social connectedness
A messaging platform with personalized messaging and removed notifications, granting users regained authority.
Core Functionality 2 Entertainment
A media controller to physically aid in the recommendation selection of streaming platforms such as Netflix.
Emergent Functionality Core functionalities 1 + 2
Merging the two core functionalities: recommending Movie/Show suggestions with personal handwritten annotations to loved ones.
